About Carbon Water Filters:
Carbon is used in water filters to absorb impurities such as chlorine, radon, VOC’s, and THM compounds. It will also improve the taste and smell of your water.
Types of carbon filtration:
- Granular activated carbon (GAC) – This is activated carbon that has a small electro-positive charge added to it so that it attracts more chemicals and impurities to it.
- Carbon block filters – have higher contaminant removal ratio.
Both of these types of filters are use activated carbon to make its use more effective in treating water.
Things to take into consideration when considering the efficiency of activated carbon.
The amount of carbon in the filter. The more the better. Also the amount of time the water spends in contact with the carbon. Therefore, slower flow rates increase the effeicincy of the carbon filter.
Carbon filters are measured in micron units dependent on the particles they remove. This ranges 50 micron – .5 micron. 0.5 micron carbon filters are the most effective at removing particles.
Lastly, the most typical types of activated carbon filters you will find in home filtration filters are
coconut shell, wood and bituminous. Coconut shell carbon filters cost more, but are deemed to be much more effective at removing contaminants.
Carbon filters alone will not remove all contaminants from water, but will significantly reduce the impurities in water.
Carbon filters will effectively remove the following contaminants from water:
Chlorine, radon, volatile organic chemicals (VOC), pesticides and herbicides, as well as chlorine, benzene, trihalomethane (THM) compounds.
Carbon filters will improve the taste of water and remove odors.
Although carbon filters can be very affordable, the main drawback of carbon filters are that you will need to change the filters frequently in order to maintain water quality.
